We also run special 'Teaching Clinics' to provide students with opportunities to experience outpatient clinics with designated teaching time between patients. Teaching clinics were set up in response to student feedback that Consultants did not always have many opportunities to teach them when in a busy clinic.

Teaching clinics take place in Outpatient Department rooms that are left vacant due to the cancellation of regular clinics. The appointment slots offered to patients are longer than standard slots to allow time for students to take a patient’s history, examine them and then present their findings to the Consultant before they do the consultation.

After the Consultant has seen the patient, there is time for them to discuss the case with the students and give them feedback on their history taking and examination techniques before the next appointment.

Teaching clinics provide students with the opportunity to experience a broader set of conditions than they would otherwise see and consolidate their learning on history taking and examination techniques.

Teaching clinics have been described by 3rd year medical students as "a huge relevance to their studies and an excellent way of learning"
