STUDENTS AT RGUC

Three Counties Medical Students

The University of Worcester offers a comprehensive curriculum for its Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) programs, both designed to prepare students for a career in medicine. The curriculum is structured into two main phases over four years, emphasising theoretical knowledge and practical clinical experience.

Phase One

First and Second Year

Curriculum Overview

During their hospital placements we support them in a 4 week block (First and Second year)

Foundation Knowledge:

The initial two years focus on the scientific principles underlying medicine. Students engage in lectures, practical sessions, group work, and online learning.

Early Clinical Contact:

Students begin interacting with patients early through longitudinal studies, such as the Family Case Study and Living with a Diagnosis, which involve prolonged patient contact.

Spiral Curriculum:

The program adopts a spiral curriculum that revisits key concepts with increasing complexity, ensuring a deep understanding of medical knowledge and skills

Types of Placements:

Community-Based Medicine

Starting from Year 1, students are placed in various GP surgeries, allowing them to observe and engage with patients in a primary care setting.

Hospital Placements

In the second through to the fifth year, students rotate through different hospital departments, gaining hands-on experience in specialties such as surgery, psychiatry, paediatrics, and obstetrics.

Learning environment:

Students are integrated into healthcare teams, working alongside experienced clinicians. They are expected to take increasing responsibility for patient care as they progress through their studies.
